If you thought Montauk was only about water sports think again. One of the top public golf courses in the USA, the Montauk Downs, attracts golfers from around the country. We have two stables that offer horseback riding, public tennis courts, a skateboard park, and sponsor four triathlons each year.

MONTAUK DOWNS STATE PARK
Montauk Downs State Park is one of our town’s real sleepers; an 18-hole year-round public golf course named a Top 10 municipal course by Links Magazine in 2013! If that’s not enough, add a driving range, putting green, pro shop, private lessons and clinics for adults and kids, a grill room, swimming pool, kids wading pool, and tennis.

URBAN GOLF ACADEMY (Children’s Golf Instruction At The Montauk Downs)
Kate Tempesta’s Urban Golf Academy is a unique program that introduces children to the game of golf as early as age four. Kate Tempesta, Founder, Partner and President, is a member of the LPGA T&CP and the Director of the Junior Golf Program at Montauk Downs, and has been named one of the top golf teachers in New York State by Golf Digest in 2013.
UGA runs a day camp for junior golfers ages 4 and up from 9:15 am to 2:15 every day that includes golf, free swim and the option for tennis Mondays through Fridays. Create your own schedule. For golfers ages 8 and up, UGA runs an evening clinic on Mondays & Wednesdays or Tuesdays & Thursdays where golfers will improve their skills in a clinic setting for one hour and then head to the course to use those skills.

An 18 hole miniature golf range, Puff & Putt in the Village, offers the whole family a waterfront miniature experience.
DEEP HOLLOW RANCH
The site of the first cattle ranch in the US, offers trail rides, group and private, special beach rides, pony rides and pony camps. Groups can arrange educational tours where Native American presentations will educate you about their way of life, then and now.

Maintains six Har–Tru courts rentable by the hour. A pro shop offers private lessons and clinics for adults. East Hampton Town owns tennis courts at two locations, one on South Erie near the corner of Embassy in the village, and clay courts at the Montauk Racquet Club off West Lake Drive.

Bring your own bike or rent one and take a leisurely tour of Montauk where wide side lanes make bicycling particularly enjoyable. The most popular ride is to the Point, a distance of about five miles from the Village. Along the way you can take your bike to Camp Hero State Park where roads curve through wooded areas passing W.W. II buildings. Take a three mile detour to Montauk Harbor on West Lake Drive, an easy route with wide shoulders and no hills.
Mountain bikers can enjoy scenic rides over thousands of acres of parkland for the best mountain biking on Long Island. Bike trails in Hither Woods such as Talkhouse Trail and Serpent’s Back offer several levels of difficulty.

Take a three-mile detour to Montauk Harbor on West Lake Drive, a flat route with wide shoulders.

RUNNING AND HIKING
Running and speed walking are popular throughout the year. Over 5,000 acres of public beaches and parkland provide ample opportunity for long nature walks. The Montauk Bike Shop has information on organized runs. See our Trail’s Section for more information on hiking trails.
MONTAUK BIKE SHOP sells equipment and offers advice; tri-guy.com or tri-gal. com. In 1983, a local Montauk motel owner, fisherman, and surfer named Robert Aaron staged one of the first triathlons, “The Mighty Montauk”, now held every June. Several others followed: the Sprint Triathlon held in July and the internationally renowned triathlon weekend held in September: the Sprint Mighty Man on Saturday followed by the Mighty Man 1/2 distance and Mighty Man Olympic on Sunday.
THE MONTAUK SKATE PARK near the village on Essex Street, a supervised park for skateboarders, recently renovated, is open from 9am to dusk in season.
Five great playgrounds in Montauk: The Montauk School (enter at 2nd House Rd and S. Eaton); next to the baseball field (at S. Edgemere and S. Erie Ave); Hither Hills State Park; Montauk Community Church (at S. Etna Ave. and S. Etna Pl.); Montauk Point Lighthouse (lower parking area, also many grill stations).
EDDIE ECKER COUNTY PARK at the end of Navy Road is not a formal playground but a great open park space on Fort Pond Bay for frisbee, lawn games, running wild, walking the dog, etc.
