surfer on wave in Montauksurfing

Ditch Plains, Montauk’s famous surfing beach, is known for having some of the best waves on the east coast. The increasing popularity of long board surfing brings many surfers and spectators to Ditch, even in the winter. Remember Ditch etiquette – the surfing areas are 250 feet in either direction to the east and west of the bathing beach. Surfers looking for bigger waves head to Camp Hero, a rock-studded patch of right breakers beneath the cliffs on which a World War II gun battery once stood, and Turtle Cove, the farthest east and perhaps best Montauk break, just below the Montauk Lighthouse. Be careful of rocks and bigger waves, these surf spots are for more experienced surfers.

Not just a sport for the young, all ages can learn to ride the waves. Don’t know how to surf? Take lessons; contact Air & Speed Surfshop (668-0356) who also offers Surfing camps throughout the summer. Kids and adults can also catch the waves and ride them to shore on boogie-boards on any of Montauk’s ocean beaches. To buy or rent a surfboard, or for advice or information, visit Air & Speed Surfshop.

snorkeling and scuba

The H.M.S. Culloden, a popular Montauk dive spot less than two miles west of the Montauk jetties at Culloden Point, brings sightings of an English frigate that sank in 1871 just 150 feet off-shore. Access is through stairs at the end of Soundview Drive, which is also a great secluded place to watch the sunset.

kitesurfing and windsurfingKite-surfing in Montauk

Napeague Harbor is one of the most popular places for kitesurfing in the northeast, with 360 degrees of sandy, uncrowded shoreline and miles of shallow, waist-deep water. Perfect for sailboards; there is always wind because of a thermal effect pulling wind off the ocean onto the bay. Shallow water, great wind, beautiful scenery and a big bay for a nice broad reach makes Napeague Bay a paradise for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
